COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The Columbus City School community has come together to remember a student that died over the weekend.

15-year-old Shavon Reid drowned while swimming with friends at Quarry Park. 

Columbus Alternative High School is honoring the 10th grader with a vigil tonight.

Friends of Reid dropped off hand written cards, flowers and teddy bears in memory of their friend. As students say goodbye, they remember what attracted them to Reid in the first place, his infectious smile.

“He’s very open-minded and he’s just very funny and loving,” said friend, Carly McCay. “I don’t think he hated one person.”

Carly McCay and Kelia Gomez become friends with Reid in Spanish class.

“Me, Carly, Shavon and our Spanish teacher were in his room and Shavon was just telling us a bunch of funny stories and making us laugh,” said Gomez.

Grief counselors were on hand today at the CAHS to help friends and classmates deal with the loss of the 15-year-old.

“We definitely will feel the void for a very long time to come,” said CAHS Principal Darryl Sanders.

Marion City Police say Reid drowned after diving off a cliff at Quarry Park Saturday afternoon.

Reid was hanging out with friends at the park swimming when he drowned. After jumping off a cliff, he began to have trouble in the water and went under.

That’s when friends called 911 for help.

After an intense search, they found his body three hours later.

Friends say they will remember him for his contagious laugh and willingness to help others.

“He was loved by so many people,” said Gomez.
