COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)– Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas feels fortunate to call Columbus home. She lives here while training for the 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.
Douglas made Olympic history when she became the first African-American female gymnast to win the individual all-around gold medal in the 2012 Olympics in London.
“It’s just crazy how time has flown by since 2012…I mean, like what? I just got done with 2012! But training’s going really well,” Douglas said
She trains under coach Kittia Carpenter at Buckeye Gymnastics in Westerville. She met the coaching staff from Buckeye Gymnastics a few years ago at a National Team Training Camp, and she developed a strong relationship when she visited Columbus, so she decided to make Central Ohio home.
“I love Buckeye and everyone on my team so much…we’re like sisters, or family, and it’s just great…and the coaching staff are so supportive and really great…I just love being here,” said Douglas.
With the Olympics now just six months away, Douglas says her training schedule is starting to get more intense.
“More hours in the gym…more intensity, routines every day, so yes…it’s very rigorous,” she said with a laugh.
But the 20-year-old Olympic gold medalist says the count down to Rio does not bring more stress to her training schedule.
“I just get really motivated because everyone gets so inspired when they see the Olympic commercials, so it’s definitely a motivation for me,” she said.
