GAHANNA, OH (WCMH) — The Grinch almost stole Christmas for Blake Malone. Earlier this month, someone stole the ATV the boy with Down syndrome shares with his twin brother.

But Monday, Christmas came early when a Gahanna business surprised him with a brand new one.

“There’s no shortage of Grinch’s in our society and the fact that these folks stepped up from Tuffy and all the other residents from Gahanna this is a really good-feel (sic) story for us and the city,” said Gahanna Police Chief Dennis Murphy.

A Facebook post about the theft touched Gahanna Tuffy Auto Service Manager Mike Gordon’s heart.

“Christmas is about giving and we wanted to give back to the little boy who lost his 4-wheeler,” said Gordon.

Gordon raised more than $1,000 to buy the Malone boys a new one. Many residents and Gahanna businesses, including Gahanna Auto Sales and Gahanna Pub, pitched in to help.

The brothers told NBC4 they didn’t know why their mom was taking them to the auto shop, but it didn’t take them long to figure it out when the garage doors opened.

“It makes my Christmas a lot better because I thought we would never get it back since someone stole it,” said 12-year-old Bo Malone.

“It’s just very overwhelming. This community does a lot for special needs and kids,” said the boys’ mom Linda Malone.

Linda said for Blake, who struggles to communicate, the four wheeler allows him to be just like everyone else.

“He took a liking to four wheelers and the faster you go the happier he is. It’s just, I think it’s a way of him just being normal, getting out and doing what other kids do,” said Linda.

So much money was raised, the family was also presented with a check to help make the holidays extra special.
