German zoo tries video dating for orangutans–and it’s working

STUTTGART, Germany (WCMH)–A zoo in southern Germany has decided to give its orangutans more mating options…through video dating.

The Wilhelma Zoo said in a press release that two of its rare orangutans were shown videos of available males to see if there was any interest in hopes of breeding.


Sinta and Conny seemed to fancy a male named Gempa, who lives 350 miles away in Belgium.

The zoo said Sinta and Gempa are now enjoying a real-life date at the Pairi Daiza zoo, approximately 40 miles southwest of Brussels.

“We will now have to wait and see, whether it will be love at second sight,” Marianne Holtkoetter, the zoo’s curator for great apes said in the statement.

Conny may try to mate with a male at the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, the zoo said.

Sinta and Conny are two of four orangutans at the Wilhelma Zoo. Sinta mated with another male at Wilhelma several years ago, but never produced offspring.What others are clicking on:
