MELVINDALE, MI (NBC/WCMH) — Police in Michigan say a hit-and-run driver caused a massive gas line explosion.

The crash happened around 3am Saturday, and flames could be seen for several miles. From a distance the fire resembled the Sun rising.

Nearby homes were evacuated, but no injuries were reported.

The fire was contained after the gas was cut off.

The driver was eventually caught by police in neighboring Dearborn after crashing again.
