AUSTIN (KXAN) – University of Texas at Austin police are investigating after a deceased person was found on campus near the Alumni Center.

The person was discovered in Waller Creek, which is west of the Alumni Center on San Jacinto at 10:46 a.m. Police are treating the death as a homicide.

The identity or gender of the deceased has not been released at this time.

In a statement on the investigation, UT President Gregory Fenves suggested the victim is known to the campus:

I have spoken with campus public safety leaders and am writing to assure you that we are doing everything possible to ensure safety on campus. We are also working closely with Austin police to identify possible suspects. We are unable to release the name of the victim or any details until the family has been notified.

Students were sent an alert from UTPD around 11:30 a.m. Classes will continue as normal. Counseling services are available for students.What others are clicking on:
