BAKERSFIELD, CA (WCMH) — The volunteer program at two California hospitals has a waiting list of people wanting to do their part at making newborns more comfortable.

“I do really love cuddling, and look at the smile,” says volunteer Monica Hubb, who has been with the program when it began two years ago at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.

“You just give them as much support and love as you can, be there and hold them, and that’s what the cuddler’s do, they hold them when the parents can’t,” Hubb tells KGET.

At Kern Medical Center, they’ve had the cuddler program for 11 years.

“We have 7 days a week almost 24 hours coverge so that way any given time a baby that may need the extra cuddling or just that human touch we can provide that to them,” says Eva Flanhgan, Clinical supervisor for NICU and Pediatrics.

The hospitals say it’s no problem finding people to volunteer because there is a waiting list of people wanting to be part of the program.
