Inmate escapes from jail using weapon made from toothbrush

EDENTON, NC (WAVY) – An inmate at the Chowan County Detention Facility escaped Sunday evening using his toothbrush.

Authorities say Kelvin Singleton, 26, used a weapon-like tool made from his toothbrush and forced an officer to release him around 4 p.m. Sunday. The officer was unharmed.


K-9 units have been dispatched and are continuing to look for Singleton in abandoned homes and wooded stations.

Singleton was last seen near the jail at the intersection of Gale and Oakum Streets. He was originally incarcerated in January on robbery and second-degree kidnapping charges.

Authorities say Singleton is also facing assault and other charges in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Chowan County Sheriff Dwayne L. Goodwin says anyone who may encounter Singleton should use caution and discreetly alert authorities. Singleton has a tattoo of a cross between his eyebrows.What others are clicking on:
