FRANKLIN CO., OH (WCMH) — Fairfield County officials say a male inmate has been recaptured after escaping during a transport to mayor’s court in Canal Winchester.

Franklin County Chief Deputy Jim Gilbert said inmate Aaron Hulme of Reynoldsburg is a Franklin County inmate. Hulme was in Fairfield County deputy custody as he was being transported to Mayor’s Court to face traffic charges, when he escaped from a substation.

Gilbert said about 40 law enforcement units came out to assist.

“It was a joint effort by many agencies that flooded the area. We brought in K-9 units from Grove City, Circleville as well as Hilliard to assist,” said Chief Deputy Gilbert. “We had sightings from citizens that were very helpful in calling 911 thinking they had spotted him.”

Deputies were searching for the inmate in several areas near Downtown Canal Winchester. He was eventually captured at a home on Jones Place.

“To flee law enforcement, to flee custody of law enforcement, you’re a danger to the public. You’re a danger to law enforcement. At any point in time it couldn’ve been a very dangerous situation where he could’ve attempted a car jacking, take individuals hostage, anything like that could have happened,” said Chief Deputy Gilbert. “When something like this happens it’s a priority obviously to get cars into the area and work on getting him apprehended.”

Chief Deputy Gilbert said he spotted Hulme hiding by an air conditioner near a home and made the arrest. He was taken into custody without incident.

Canal Winchester schools were placed on lockdown during the search.
