SACRAMENTO, CA (WCMH) — A California bakery is getting overwhelming support after initial backlash when a picture of the cake was posted to Facebook.
“We’ve got more coming just for this weekend, it seems like just in the last two or three hours, we’ve actually got more orders,” head decorator at Freeport Bakery Carol Clevenger told KOVR.
The ken doll, wearing a pink dress and jewelry made out frosting, started a firestorm of comments when the picture was posted to the bakery’s Facebook page. Many felt the cake was a political statement on the transgender community.
“Every negative comment email, text message I get, there are at least 30-45 comments saying we support you from New Zealand, from Canada,” said Clevenger.
Clevenger says the cake, with its earrings and pearl necklace, is an unintended statement that the bakery proudly stands by.
Customer Aaron Carruthers told KOVR he ordered the cake because he wanted to support the local bakery as much as possible. “I have 30 people over, they’re all gonna enjoy the cake, I told them we have a special guest, he’s been on the news, and I won’t tell them who it is, they’ll find out when they get there.”
