COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A sea of pink will overtake Columbus, Saturday morning, as the largest race in the country devoted to fighting breast cancer will be taking place downtown.
One in eight women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
At the current rate, 13 million breast cancer deaths around the world will happen in the next 25 years.
Breast cancer knows no boundaries, age, gender, socioeconomic status or geographic location.
But the survival rate is improving.
in the 1980s the 5-year-relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer was about 74 percent. Today that number is 99 percent.
One hundred percent of net proceeds of Race for the Cure goes to the Susan G. Komen Mission. Seventy-five percent stays in the Columbus community to help fund local programs offering breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment.
The remaining 25 percent supports the Susan G. Komen Grants program.
