NEW YORK (WCMH) — When unassuming 82-year-old John Hetlinger took the stage on Monday’s episode of “America’s Got Talent” no one expected the song he was about to sing.
The audition started off normally enough. Judge Simon Cowell asked Hetlinger some basic questions, where he was from; what he used to do for a living.
“I served in the Navy four years,” John said. “Two years in a patrol squadron in Okinawa.”
John was a Navy pilot, later a minister and then an aerospace engineer for Ball Aerospace in Boulder where he worked on a team that made repairs to the Hubble telescope.Related: Simon Cowell tells 12-year-old she’s ‘the next Taylor Swift’
Hetlinger informed the judges that he was from Colorado and a former aerospace engineer who helped repair the Hubble space telescope. Also, Hetlinger enjoyed karaoke, so when it was time for him to perform, the audience expected to hear him sing. And sing he did…
Hetlinger sang the heavy metal group Drowning Pool’s “Bodies”.
After Tuesday night’s broadcast of America’s Got Talent, John might consider adding another chapter to his book. The 82-year-old’s jaw-dropping performance of “Bodies” by heavy metal band, Drowning Pool, brought the crowd to its feet.
“I didn’t know two and a half thousand in the audience would react the same way that 30 drunks in the bar do, but they did!” John said.
Just another example of why you should expect the unexpected on “America’s Got Talent”.
