COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol released its statistics for Memorial Day weekend and reported 14 fatal crashes.
Seventeen people were killed in those crashes, which included a double fatal crash in Montgomery County and a triple fatal crash in Scioto County. One fatal crash occurred in Columbus, with two near Cincinnati and two near Cleveland.
Five of those killed in the crashes from Friday to Monday were operating a vehicle under the influence, troopers said. Four who died were not wearing a seatbelt and four motorcycle riders killed were reported as either “not wearing a helmet or unknown if they were wearing a helmet.”
The fatalities from Ohio crashes during this Memorial Day weekend was a decrease compared with 2023, when 26 people were killed. The highway patrol has reported decreases in fatal accidents over multiple recent holiday periods, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s.
Over this past Memorial Day weekend period, troopers said they made 361 OVI arrests, 61 drug arrests, issued more than 1,000 distracted driving citations and more than 2,600 seat belt citations. Of the more than 29,000 reported incidents during the holiday weekend, Franklin County had the most of any county by far, with more than 1,200.
