COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — As spring break season approaches, many travelers could run short on time to apply for or renew their passports, but a few options can speed up the process.
Vacationers can prepare for their international trip with this guide for getting a U.S. passport.
First, people should determine if their passports can be renewed, or if a new passport is needed. According to the State Department, international travelers should apply for a passport in person when they are:
- Applying for the first time, or are under 16.
- Previous passport issued when under 16.
- Previous passport lost, stolen, or damaged.
- Previous passport issued more than 15 years ago.
- Name changed since the passport was issued and they are unable to document the change.
In September, the State Department launched an online portal, allowing Americans to renew passports online. However, processing and mailing time could still take 6-8 weeks. To qualify the following conditions should apply:
- The passport was valid for 10 years, and the applicant is 25 or older.
- The passport is expiring within one year or expired fewer than five years ago.
- Applicant is not changing name, sex, date of birth, or place of birth.
- Only routine service is offered and the time involved is the same as renewing by mail.
- Applicant lives in the United States (state or territory).
- Passport is not damaged, mutilated, or reported as lost or stolen.
- Payment types include credit or debit cards.
- Applicant can upload a digital passport photo.
- Current passport will be canceled after the application is submitted and cannot be used for international travel.
Routine passport processing
Travelers can expect to wait up to six weeks, plus mailing time for a passport by taking the basic route.
• Fill out a form called a DS-11 and print it, it should not be signed until applying in person.
• Gather citizen evidence, such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or consular report of birth abroad.
• Make a photocopy of the back and front of a driver’s license or government ID.
• Take a passport photo, with the proper requirements.
• Payment of fees is accepted in cash, credit, or money orders.
• Make an appointment and apply in person at authorized acceptance facilities such as post offices, clerks of court, or public libraries.
Expedited passport processing
For faster service, expedited processing can be requested for an additional $60. This reduces the processing time to two to three weeks, plus mailing times. This service is available at the same acceptance facilities. Call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to request. One-to-two-day delivery is available for an extra $21.36.
Urgent passport processing
For travelers leaving within 14 days an appointment at a passport agency or center is needed. Currently, there are none in Ohio, the closest location is the Detroit Passport Agency. Appointments are required and can be made online.
