How long flags will remain at half-staff in Ohio in honor of former President Jimmy Carter

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Gov. Mike DeWine ordered flags at half-staff beginning on Dec. 30, 2024, after the death of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States.

In a news release, the governor announced that U.S. and State of Ohio flags would be lowered on public buildings and grounds throughout the state for 30 days. DeWine placed the command in accordance with orders issued by President Joe Biden to pay tribute to the “life and service of former President James Earl Carter, Jr.”

Carter, the longest-living president, died at 100 on Dec. 29, 2024. Under a 1954 proclamation signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, U.S. flags fly at half-staff for 30 days from the death of a sitting or former president. For Carter, flags will fly at half-staff until sunset on Jan. 28. Flags will still be at half-staff during the Jan. 20 inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Carter’s funeral will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9 at Washington National Cathedral, NBC4 viewers can watch live coverage beginning at 10 a.m.
