COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A man is in custody after reportedly being placed in a headlock by the Amazon truck driver he was allegedly attempting to steal from.

According to court documents, Samuel Pritchard, 24, is facing one count of robbery stemming from a Sunday afternoon incident near Grandview Heights. Police said that at around 1 p.m. officers responded to a call about a fight near the intersection of West Third and Fairview avenues, where an Amazon delivery truck was parked.

The alleged fight involved a delivery truck driver and a man who is accused of attempting to steal the truck. The driver told police that while he was in the back of the truck, Pritchard hopped in the driver’s seat and tried to drive off.

The driver, who suffered minor injuries during the fight, said he punched Pritchard and put him in a headlock. Pritchard fought back and tried to flee the scene, but the driver held onto him until police arrived.

During an interview at police headquarters, Pritchard said he was withdrawing from fentanyl and only remembered parts of what occurred. He was arrested on one count of robbery with attempting to inflict or threaten serious physical harm and issued a $150,000 bond in Franklin County Municipal Court.

Shannon Ghizzoni witnessed some of the end of the incident. She was about to go on a run when she noticed what was going on. She recorded some of the situation on her cell phone. She said at first she thought it was a minor accident but quickly realized it was something different based on the officers’ response.

“Saw the cops, the police just flying in towards the van and jumping out with their guns drawn, so then I realized this was not just a car accident,” she said.

She said the incident made her think more about what delivery drivers may face while they are just doing their jobs.

“I was really upset that he had to go through that,” she said. “I just feel really bad for the driver and I’m glad that everyone kind of got out without being injured and the fact there was no one on the street or sidewalk that could have been hit from that van.”
