COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCHM) — A Columbus man is under arrest after being charged in the shooting death of a man on the east side of the city last month.
James Locke, 24, is charged with murder in the death of 44-year-old Robert “Roderick” Smith, who was found sitting in a parked car with a gunshot wound in an apartment complex on the 2900 block of Dana Drive in the early morning of Nov. 16.
Court documents state that a 911 caller told police a heavy-set male, approximately 20-30 years old, was walking around the building with a gun and that moments later a white vehicle fled the parking lot.
Officers arrived to find a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica with Illinois license plate that had bullet strikes to the drivers side window. Smith was inside with a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at 1:59 a.m.
Detectives collected prints from the drivers side door and cell phone data helped police identity Locke as a suspect and he was arrested while being held at Franklin County Jail on an unrelated case.
Locke appeared in court on murder charges Thursday morning and was issued a $1 million bond. He is next scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 20 for a preliminary hearing.
