COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A seven-month-old baby died Wednesday morning after being attacked by a dog in south Columbus.
Police said the baby was attacked by the family’s dog inside their home on South Champion Avenue and was taken to the fire station on Parsons Avenue with serious injuries. A spokesperson for the Columbus Division of Fire confirmed the baby’s age as seven months old and that a woman brought the infant to the station.
The baby was then taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead at 11:43 a.m., according to a police dispatcher.
Police said the baby’s death appears to be accidental and no charges will be filed against the family.
“There’s really not a lot of words I can say to convey how I feel and how the officers who arrived, family, everyone involved in this process is literally grieving as if this child belonged to us, because most of us, again, are parents and can’t imagine just how tragic this scene is,” Columbus Police Sgt. James Fuqua said.
Neighbors said the family had just recently moved to the neighborhood.
“We happened to look out the window and see, with, about five police lined up outside of the house,” one neighbor said of the scene Wednesday.
The Franklin County Animal Control is taking over the investigation and has taken three dogs into custody.
