COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A man accused of kidnapping and raping a woman he met on a dating app was arrested and was in court Thursday morning.

Police arrested Shawn Bowles, 28, was arrested and charged with rape and kidnapping, first-degree felonies, as well as strangulation, a second-degree felony. Bowles is accused of meeting a woman he met on a dating app and taking her to his apartment before sexually assaulting her, according to court documents.

An officer responded to reports of the abuse on Jan. 28, when the victim called and told police she was sexually assaulted the previous night. The officer took the woman to Doctors West hospital for an examination and contacted a detective with the Sexual Assault Unit.

At the hospital, the woman told the detective that she met Bowles through the dating app SKOUT on Jan. 27. Bowles picked her up at around 7:30 p.m. before taking her to his apartment, though at the time she did not know the location.

The victim reported that once they were at the apartment, Bowles grabbed her throat and twice forced her to give him oral sex. Bowles reportedly continued to strangle the victim until she lost consciousness. Police said he then forced the woman to have intercourse.

Bowles was identified through Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway (OLEG) and Accurint Virtual Crime Center databases along with a positive identification from the victim through a photo array. She additionally gave police a description of a white pickup truck that Bowles owns.

Police arrested Bowles Tuesday at his apartment near the Valleyview Heights neighborhood. A Franklin County Municipal judge issued him a $750,000 bond and ordered him to next appear in court on Feb. 23 for a preliminary hearing.
