COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A local toy inventor is turning a chance idea into a thriving business with a product that helps children learn while using their creativity and imagination.

Tim Holmes’ product, called Nurkl, a craft stick connector set compatible with other building toys, began in 2017 as a hobbyist project involving 3D-printed prototypes. Since then, it has become a company with national ambitions.

In an email to NBC4, Holmes described his journey from a struggling entrepreneur to a potential retail partner with major chains, and how perseverance and innovation help move his company forward. He explained that a relaunch of Nurkl earlier this year marked a turning point for his business, despite many serious struggles.

“As a father of five, navigating the current economic climate has been tough,” Holmes wrote. “At one point, we faced the real possibility of being evicted due to falling two months behind on rent and other bills.”

Even with these challenges, Holmes remained steadfast, driven by his belief in his product and its potential to create a better future for his family. “It is often at our lowest points that breakthrough moments occur,” Holmes said, reflecting on his journey.

A major opportunity came when Holmes was invited to Bentonville, Arkansas, to present his product to Walmart. The meeting proved pivotal, as Walmart executives were impressed by the product and his inspiring story. Holmes is now working with the retail giant to stock his product in stores nationwide by next year. Additionally, he is preparing to distribute through Micro Center, securing placement in all 28 of the tech retailer’s locations.

“These recent developments have come at a critical time, as we have been struggling financially,” said Holmes. “In fact, we didn’t have the funds to attend the meeting in Arkansas, but through unexpected support, we were able to make the trip, and all costs were covered.”

These recent successes have propelled Holmes’ company onto the path of significant growth. With aspirations to become a Fortune 500 company, Holmes is focused on scaling up manufacturing, a process he estimates will require an investment of $1 million.

“The past few years have been filled with challenges and moments when giving up seemed like the easier option, but I have remained determined to support my family and grow our company in a way that will make a positive difference,” said Holmes. “Now, we are starting to see the fruits of that hard work, although we know there is still much to be done.”

Currently, Nurkl can be found in Columbus inside the gift shop at COSI. Shoppers can also purchase the toy on the Nurkl website.
