COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Dozens of cars were broken into in an apparent smash-and-grab north of Downtown Columbus early Friday morning.

Columbus police were called to the 300 block of East Second Avenue in the Italian Village neighborhood where several car windows were smashed out. A witness told police someone was breaking into cars at around 3:15 a.m.

No one was reportedly injured during the smash-and-grab, which included at least 30 cars vandalized in and around the Station 324 Apartment complex.

Police said the cars were either broken into or entered through unlocked doors, though a total number of victims has yet to be finalized.

CPD believes there are five or six suspects responsible for the break-ins that they fled the area in a silver Chrysler 300. Detectives with the Zone Investigation Unit are working to obtain area surveillance footage.

One victim, Preston Smith, found out his car was one of the ones vandalized when he went outside to take his dog for a walk.

“I saw that little blue dog bowl and I knew it was his. Someone had broken into my car a week ago but didn’t break any glass or anything, so I thought it (the dog bowl) was there from the time before and I just walked up to my car and saw well, I saw everyone’s window here shattered including mine,” said Smith.

All that was missing from his car was a pair of sunglasses.

“Other than that I really keep nothing in my car so no, I don’t think so. They were probably pretty disappointed,” Smith added.

Tristan Huck, another victim, said there has been other instances like this one before, despite having security. A pair of headphones was taken from his car..

“It’s insane. It’s the second time it’s happened since I’ve been here that it’s been 30 plus cars. It happened a couple months ago,” said Huck.

Residents are frustrated. They said that the apartment complex has security that is supposed to drive around at night, yet cars continually get broken into.

It happened to Brendan Harty three separate times.

“Something clearly needs to change because I don’t know why anyone would want to live in this area, it’s a fun area to visit but it’s getting less fun to live in for sure,” Harty said.

NBC4 reached out to the apartment complex for comment on this incident but has not heard back.
