COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Ohio Department of Transportation is reminding drivers what not to do after missing an exit on the highway after a three-car crash on Interstate 71 South earlier this week.

David Berk, owner of Faith Driving School in Hilliard said it was extremely careless of the driver to come to a stop in the middle of the highway. He said in the event of a missed exit, take the next one. Even if it adds time to the drive, it’s better than putting lives at risk.

“Even if you’re driving along and your friends or your family tell you to turn and it’s too late, you go on up the the next road, the next intersection, even if it takes an extra five, 15 minutes,” Berk said. “That’s a whole lot less time than filling our an insurance report or taking care of even a worse situation.”

ODOT posted traffic camera video of the crash to social media.

“Actions like the one in the video are extremely dangerous to yourself and other drivers,” ODOT wrote.

In the video, a red van stopped right in the middle lane of the interstate after missing the exit, forcing two other vehicles to stop behind it.

A silver van was unable to stop, and slammed into one of the cars.

The chain reaction crash caused some vehicles to spin around.

Berk said there are two big things they teach in driving school: Observation and control.

By paying attention to traffic in front, and being a defensive driver, situations like these are 100% preventable.

“Knowledge builds control,” Berk said. “Control builds confidence. If you know where everything is around, you’re watching your mirrors, you’re watching your speed, you’re watching up in front and way in the distance, you know where everything is. You can anticipate things.”

The video from ODOT also shows the red van drive away seemingly unharmed.

NBC4 has reached out to police to learn if the driver of the red van has been identified and if charges will be filed.
