Fatal shooting at vigil remains under investigation

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Columbus police are asking for the public’s help to find those responsible for a double fatal shooting at Krumm Park Monday night.

The shooting happened while people were there for a candlelight vigil in honor of 18-year-old Da’Mya Cummerlander. Tuesday afternoon, police arrested 20-year-old Kenneth Hariston and charged him with involuntary manslaughter for Cummerlander’s death.

The vigil happened right next to a police video tower stationed at the park.

Columbus Police Deputy Chief Smith Weir said investigators have been reviewing the footage but need others to send in what they know too.

“We need video footage, we need evidence, we need physical evidence to help identify the suspects from last night,” Weir said. “We know that there are multiple shooters based on the evidence at the scene. Anybody that was involved, you know, we would ask that before we come to have to look for you, why don’t you come in and talk to us?”

Weir said they are still trying to figure out what brought the suspects to the vigil Monday night.

Tuesday morning there were still remnants left over from that from the memorial service for Cummerlander. There was also a growing candle and flower vigil for the two victims killed during the vigil Monday. Police have not yet released the names of the two victims.

NBC4 spoke with people who were at the vigil. They did not want to give their names or go on camera, saying they feared this was a targeted incident and they were worried about retaliation.

Police said they understand their fears, but now is the time to speak up if you know something. Weir said the surveillance footage shows a couple of dozen people with phones out at the time of the shooting.

“All kinds of concerns and anxiety on top of an already emotional situation, so I understand why there are people that are concerned,” he said. “We are hoping that the charges and arrests we made today in terms of the incident involving Ms. Cummerlander on Woodsedge on Sunday, might help take the temperature down a little bit to show that we are out there. We are making progress.”
