COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Columbus Division of Police and state investigators continue to look into a domestic violence situation which also included shots being fired at officers and the suspect being fatally shot by police.

It happened Monday night at a northeast Columbus apartment complex. A neighbor who asked not to be identified got back to her apartment after 9 p.m. She said she could hear glass breaking, yelling, and a man threatening a woman’s life in another apartment.

“I was afraid, but like I couldn’t imagine how afraid she was. How terrified she could have been,” the neighbor said. “I could hear him talk to her in such a menacing way, it sent chills up my spine. I said he means it, he means it.”

The neighbor called 911. A man was holding a woman hostage and shot at the first officers to get there, according to CDP.

“He was pretty much holding her captive here at this point in time, he wasn’t going to let her leave,” the neighbor said.

The SWAT team responded as well. Police said while SWAT was talking to the man over the phone, he shot at them. Police said around 11:45 p.m. the suspect had the woman he was holding hostage with him, opened the apartment door, and raised the gun. Officers then fatally shot him.

“It’s extremely dangerous. They already know they’re going to be in trouble if they live through it, they know they’re going to go to jail or go to prison so there’s nothing to lose. And that puts our officers at risk, that puts the survivors and victims at risk,” Marica Phipps-Johnson said.

Phipps-Johnson is a survivor of domestic violence and is the founder and CEO of Battered Not Broken, a non-profit which supports other survivors. She said she is glad the neighbor made the call.

“’If you see something, say something’ could literally save a life,” she said. “People need to say something. That could literally be the matter of life and death for somebody.”

She said saying something can also include asking someone if they are safe.

“When I was hearing all that I was like well would I want somebody to call for me? And that answer was astoundingly yes,” the neighbor said.

The man’s name has not yet been released. At last check with Columbus police, they were still trying to get in touch with his family.
