COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A Columbus police officer was injured and a suspect shot after allegedly hitting the officer with a stolen car Wednesday on the North Side.

According to Sgt. Joe Albert, the incident started when a 911 caller reported seeing their stolen car, a 2015 Toyota Corolla, at the intersection of North Meadows Boulevard and East Dublin Granville Road.

After locating the vehicle, officers attempted to stop the car near Beechcroft Road and Clintonview Street, but the car fled the scene. Police decided not to pursue the vehicle, Albert said.

About 20 minutes later, at 3:51 p.m., officers located the Corolla in the parking lot of a Shell gas station in the 900 block of East Dublin Granville Road. Police attempted to prevent the car from exiting the gas station by using Stop Sticks, but the car drove around them and headed to the Huntley Square Shopping Center.

Again, officers attempted to use Stop Sticks and blocked the exits from the shopping center. The driver reversed the car but was pinned inside the center’s parking lot.

“At one point, the vehicle was backing up and then abruptly drives forward in an aggressive manner and strikes one of our sergeants,” Albert said. “Our sergeant ended up on the hood of the vehicle while the vehicle was driving through the parking lot. That sergeant deployed their firearm, discharged their firearm several times, striking the driver of the vehicle.”

Albert said the driver was an adult woman. She was later identified as 32-year-old Holly Graham, according to court documents.

Graham then drove the Corolla through a grass median, onto the westbound lanes of East Dublin Granville Road before stopping, which is when the officer fell from the car. She next drove to the area of the exit ramps for Interstate 71, where she hit two other cars head-on. The vehicle was damaged enough that officers were able to take the driver into custody, Albert said.

The officer was taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition, while Graham was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in serious condition. The people inside the two cars that were hit head-on were treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said.

“The officer is in very bad shape, he is in stable condition,” Brian Steele of the Fraternal Order of Police said. “We think he is going to pull through, but has a long road to recovery.”

Albert said the area is busy at that time of day.

“This is a very dangerous situation, complete no regard for our personnel’s safety or anybody’s safety in the area as far as the suspect goes,” Albert said. “She had no regard for anybody’s safety as evidenced by striking one of our sergeants and continuing to drive while he’s on the hood of the vehicle and continuing to drive after being shot.”

The investigation is being handled by the Ohio Bureau of Investigation.

Albert said the crime scenes and surrounding roadways along East Dublin Granville Road and Huntley Road areas were closed for more than six hours and reopened just after 10:30 p.m.

Graham, who remains in custody at Riverside Methodist Hospital, is charged with felonious assault and is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment hearing at 9 a.m. Friday.

Due to Marsy’s Law, the identity of the officer involved in the shooting has not been released, but police did say he is a 10-year veteran with the Columbus Division of Police.
