COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A 20-year-old student at an Ohio university was among those killed Wednesday night when an American Airlines passenger jet collided with an Army helicopter in Washington D.C.
Grace Maxwell was a junior at Cedarville University. The plane took off from her hometown of Wichita, Kansas.

“As you can imagine, the past 24 hours have been very difficult for the Maxwell family and the Cedarville University community,” a statement from the university read. “As a university, we do not desire to turn this tragic event into anything more than a way to honor Grace, her family and Jesus.”
Cedarville is a private Christian university of about 4,700 students about 60 miles west of Columbus.
The Wichita Eagle reported that Maxwell was returning to Ohio after going home for the funeral of her grandfather. She was a biomedical engineering major, her father, Dean, told the Eagle.
Another Ohioan confirmed to have died on the flight is Cincinnati native Elizabeth Keys.
Keys was an associate at the law firm Wilkinson Stekloff, which had offices in Washington, D.C. and New York City. In a statement, the firm wrote:
“We are heartbroken by this terrible tragedy. Liz and Sarah [Lee Best, another Wilkinson associate] were cherished members of our firm—wonderful attorneys, colleagues, and friends. Beyond being an excellent lawyer, Liz brought fearlessness, humor, and sharp wit to work every day, no matter the setting or circumstances. Sarah joined us just last fall and quickly energized us all with her boundless curiosity, kindness, and intelligence. It is hard to imagine the firm without them. We are keeping them in our memories and their families in our thoughts and prayers.“
The plane was on its final approach to Reagan National Airport outside Washington, D.C., when it collided with the helicopter about 9 p.m. The plane split apart, and both aircraft fell into the Potomac River. A total of 67 people were believed to have been killed, with no survivors.
