Woman dead in east Columbus apartment fire

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A woman is dead in an apartment fire on the east side of Columbus Saturday afternoon.

According to Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin, the fire started at approximately 4:27 p.m. on the 1000 block of Lancer Way in an eight-unit, two-story apartment building.

Martin confirmed the death, saying the woman was found inside the building. He did not offer any other details.

A second person was taken to a local hospital for treatment of burns suffered in the fire, Martin said.

As of 6:15 p.m., firefighters were still on the scene, but Martin said the fire was contained.

“We got the building, got the smoke out of it, and we’re able to take a look,” Martin said. “It is a fire fatality, it’s being investigated now to determine the cause, and that’s kind of where we’re at now.”

There are no details yet as to how the fire started.

Martin credited the building’s firewalls for preventing the fire from spreading into other units and working smoke detectors in other apartments for alerting tenants and letting them get out safely.
