COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Sometimes, all it takes is for someone to be in the right place at the right time.
This holds true after two power washers saved a historic Victorian Village home from a devastating fire last month. The home that caught fire is more than 100 years old.
Mauro Segabinazzi said he and his husband, Keith, were renovating their Victorian Village home. He said that on April 27, they were on the third floor while contractors were on the first.
“They were, like, trying to strip the varnish off our stairs to be finished,” Segabinazzi said.
He said there was some kind of chemical reaction that caused a fire.
“So me and my husband, we were working upstairs, and we heard the contractors screaming, so we rushed downstairs and I could see the flames and smoke already,” Segabinazzi said. “So I called Keith, my husband, and we grabbed the dogs. We jumped. The complete stairs were on fire, so we came here outside somehow, we were trying to help stopping the fire but there was no water because it was winter so everything was shut down and we were doing a remodeling so there was no way to reach the water.”
Meanwhile, across the street, Korey Cooper and his brother with Forza Roof Cleaning were working on another home.
“We did hear some yelling down the street and didn’t think much of it at first, but then we saw some cars pull up and people hurrying out, and then we saw the smoke and that’s when we noticed there was a fire,” Cooper said.
Cooper said they gathered their power washing equipment.
“It was truly divine intervention because we wouldn’t have been able to reach where we were originally parked, and city workers came up to us and we’re like, ‘Hey, we’re working on the street, you got to move the truck,’ and then it was probably 45 minutes after that where the fire broke out,” Cooper said.
He said they just kept spraying basically until the flames died down and the fire department arrived. He said once the firefighters were there they just went back to their regular work.
“The firefighter brought me aside and was like, if you guys didn’t have that quick action and thinking, then this fire would reach the second story and then probably would have went over to the next house,” Cooper said.
Segabinazzi said they basically lost everything from smoke damage and have to restart renovations
“This is where it started, this was the stairs that were getting clean, so clearly fire damage like the chandelier is, those were like brand new floors and now they need to get replaced,” Segabinazzi said. “I mean, it’s hard to not be living in our, this is our home, but I am very grateful. Honestly, it could be much worse. So everything is like, and just happened for a reason.”
He said he is thankful for the help of those good Samaritans.
“Everyone can hire those guys, they are like heroes,” Segabinazzi said.
Cooper said he and his brother would do it all again.
