COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A central Ohio restaurant is using its surprise appearance in Grammy Award-winning band’s new music video to help a local food pantry.
Twenty One Pilots released the music video for its song “Lavish” Friday. The Columbus duo recorded the video in front of businesses across central Ohio. One of the storefronts which makes a few appearances is Lavash Cafe, a Mediterranean restaurant in Clintonville.
“To see Lavash in the background, it’s incredible, and it’s even funnier because a lot of people mis-say our name and they always call us lavish so it was like, couldn’t be more perfect,” Dr. Jamal Latif, co-owner of Lavash Cafe, said.
He learned about the video after it was released Friday.
“Just for the local guys to shout out local businesses was so, so very humbling,” Latif said. “You can’t not be geeked out. I’d be lying if I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s no big deal.'”
The fun of being in the band’s work turned into Lavash serving people outside its restaurant. Twenty-one percent of all hummus sales over the weekend were donated to the Clintonville Beechwold Community Resources Center Food Pantry.
“They didn’t have to do that and they chose to, and look at all of the good it’s done,” the center’s Vice President of Development Stephanie Shildt said.
Lavash donated more than $400 from the Twenty One Pilots-inspired hummus fundraiser. Shildt said the center also got out-of-state donations from people who couldn’t make it to Lavash, some in the amount of $21.
“It was just so much fun because who would have thought this little town of Clintonville could have such a big impact,” Shildt said. “We have people donating from all over, fans wanting to support our food pantry, and it’s just amazing.”
Between the fundraiser at the restaurant and online donations, Shildt said more than $700 was raised. Latif said he’s thinking about holding a similar fundraiser when Twenty One Pilots plays in Columbus in October.
