COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A Downtown bar that shut down after being struck by a car seven months ago has set a reopening date.
A driver ran into Char Bar, located at 439 N. High St., on Sept. 1, according to Columbus police. After seven months to repair the damage, the bar announced on Instagram that it will reopen on Thursday for its regular hours – 3 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
“We are SO excited to welcome you back!” the post reads. “Join us this Thursday!”
No one was injured in the crash. The driver of the car, a 42-year-old man, was identified by police shortly after the incident and charged with failure to control, failure to stop after an accident and two charges related to operating a vehicle impaired, which are all misdemeanors. The case remains open, according to Franklin County court records.
The incident at Char Bar was part of a series of car crashes into buildings in 2024, which garnered widespread attention on social media. Despite this, the total number of car crashes into structures last year was lower than years past, according to Columbus Division of Fire Battalion Chief Jeffrey Geitter.
“With social media and just some of the buildings that have been struck, it may seem that we’ve seen an uptick, but as the data shows, we actually have not, but it doesn’t lessen the situations,” Geitter previously told NBC4.
In 2024, the fire department was dispatched to 139 total incidents involving a vehicle crashing into a structure. In 2023, the fire department was dispatched to 279 incidents and in 2022, 313.
