COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A man facing charges in connection to a mass shooting in the Short North last summer changed his plea in court Tuesday morning.
According to Franklin County Court of Common Pleas documents, Gabriel Hunter was one of several arrests in a mass shooting that injured 10 people in the 1100 block of North High Street just before 2:30 a.m. on June 23, 2024.
Among four named suspects, Hunter was charged with third-degree tampering with evidence and third-degree having weapons while under disability. Under the plea agreement the weapons charge was dropped and he pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.
Hunter is expected to appear for sentencing next week, according to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office.
Cases against other defendants — 19-year-old DeAngelo Fuller, 22-year-old Rondell Mallory, and 21-year-old Michael Wright Jr. — are still pending. They are all charged with either tampering with evidence, obstruction of justice and/or failure to comply.
Hunter and Mallory’s charges included firearm specifications though no one has been charged with firing any weapons in the incident.
Fuller turned himself in to police the same day of the shooting after allegedly leading officers in a car chase. He received a $100,000 bond from a municipal court judge before the case was moved to common pleas court. A grand jury later indicted Mallory and Hunter on July 24.
Columbus police released body camera footage showing 11 officers’ viewpoints from the shooting. At least 20 shots rang out before the officers ran toward High Street and chased after suspects. You can see the body camera footage in the video player above.
Police said eight of the 10 victims shot were adults, two were juveniles with the ages of victims ranging from 16 to 27.
