COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Two men who pleaded guilty to a 2023 crime spree that included a shootout on a freeway and armed robberies at a car dealership and bank have been sentenced to prison.
Faisal Darod, 25, and Aden Jama, 21, received their sentences in federal court Wednesday on numerous charges stemming from the July crime spree. Darod received a 25-year prison sentence after reversing his plea to guilty in October 2023. He faced nine charges including aiding and abetting robberies and aiding and abetting the use of a firearm during the robberies.
Jama was sentenced to 13 years in prison for charges of being an accessory after the fact to bank robbery, two counts of aiding and abetting robberies and two counts of aiding and abetting the use of a firearm during the robberies. He also pleaded guilty in October 2023 with court records showing he reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.
“Some of that sentence is intended for people that may be somewhere in our community right now intending to hurt other people in our community,” said Gregory Bodker, Columbus police’s assistant chief. “That’s unacceptable and hopefully they will see this and they will take that to heart.”
Both men along with 19-year-old Abdisamad Ismail were part of a crime stretch on July 6, 2023 that spanned across the town. It began at 2 p.m. when police began a pursuit after an armed robbery at a Porsche dealership on the 400 block of North Hamilton Road in Whitehall.
The three suspects demanded the keys to a black Porsche and drove it across Columbus to the Fifth Third Bank on the 2400 block of Hilliard Rome Road. An officer was shot during the pursuit while Ismail was shot and killed by police on I-70 after the chase.
“It can sound trite at times, but they really are willing to risk their lives to keep us safe and he certainly did that day,” said U.S. assistant attorney Noah Litton. “He’s paying the price still for it and that’s deeply, deeply unfortunate.”
Darod was arrested on July 7 at his Columbus home before being indicted while Jama was arrested the next day at Chicago O’Hare International Airport by the U.S. Marshals Service. Jama had a plane ticket to leave for Turkey that day.
The U.S. Southern District Court said Jama’s plea agreement detailed a June 21, 2023 robbery at a GameStop in Hilliard where Darod and another man initially planned to rob a bank until they realized the bank was closed. The agreement also detailed a July 3 robbery of a Corvette Stingray from the Auto Gallery on Westerville Road.
