COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – At least three Columbus SWAT officers were injured and a suspect is dead after a shooting on the west side of the city Thursday night.
Columbus police said the incident started at 4:24 p.m. as a SWAT situation developed on the 800 block of Cherryberry Drive in the Westland area. The incident began as a response to a domestic violence situation but escalated to a barricade scene, which left multiple officers injured, police said.
According to the Fraternal Order of Police President Lt. Brian Steel, three officers sustained non-life threatening injuries. They were all taken to the hospital all in a stable condition.
Albert said none of the officers were shot, saying multiple officers were injured and multiple officers were stabbed. He added the suspect was dead, with at least one officer firing their gun.
The suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Benjamin Wheeler, was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. by the Columbus Division of Fire and it was confirmed by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office.
Steel said the officers have been with the department for at least 20 years. Details on what led to the confrontation have not been released.
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther released the following statement:
“Tonight, my prayers are with the Columbus Division of Police officers injured in the line of duty, as well as their families. I am grateful for their bravery in the face of danger and their commitment to protecting our residents. Violence, particularly toward our officers, is never acceptable. I wish them a full and speedy recovery.”
