The Columbus Division of Police says the officer who shot and killed a woman during an undercover prostitution sting last week is the subject of a criminal investigation himself.
According to a statement from Columbus Police, Officer Andrew Mitchell is the subject of a criminal investigation stemming from a citizen complaint filed earlier in August. The department did not provide information about what the complaint entails.
On the morning Thursday, Aug. 23, Mitchell shot and killed Donna Castleberry, 23, after she allegedly stabbed Mitchell in the hand while inside his unmarked vehicle. The Columbus Division of Police says investigators are working to determine if there is any connection between the citizen complaint against Mitchell and the deadly shooting of Castleberry.
Police say Mitchell will not be returning to full duty until he is medically cleared and undergoes a mandatory psychological assessment and he will not be resuming any Vice Unit duties until the division has gathered enough evidence to determine if he will face discipline or criminal charges.
