DELAWARE, Ohio (WCMH) – A Delaware County Sheriff deputy was injured while responding to a crash along an Interstate 71 exit ramp Thursday morning.
According to the sheriff’s office, one of their deputies was involved in a crash near the exit ramp of U.S. 36 and State Route 37 on I-71 South. The Ohio State Highway Patrol later confirmed it was investigating a serious-injury crash when a woman operating a 2017 Freightliner Cascadia lost control of the semi-truck and jack-knifed off the west side of the highway.
Two Delaware County Sheriff deputies were investigating a previous crash and standing next to a disabled 2009 Toyota Camry on the right berm of the highway. The truck then struck the Toyota and the deputy.
The deputy was transported to an area hospital in serious condition, but the injuries are not life threatening. The driver of the truck was not injured
One other person was reportedly trapped in another vehicle, but it is not yet known the severity of their injury.
The exit ramp from US-36/SR-37 to I-71 South and the highway was closed for several hours beginning at around 4 a.m., and it reopened just after 8 a.m.
