POWELL, Ohio (WCMH) — Johnson’s Real Ice Cream is opening yet another central Ohio shop in celebration of the company’s 75th anniversary.

The Bexley-based ice cream shop will welcome customers in April to the new location at 50 S. Liberty St. in Powell’s downtown district, the brand announced this month. The new storefront will mark Johnson’s ninth Columbus-area shop and the second in Powell, the first of which was announced last fall and is scheduled to open in March.

“We’re excited to open our second location in Powell as part of Johnson’s Real Ice Cream’s 75th anniversary celebration,” said Matt Wilcoxon, fourth-generation owner. “For generations, our ice cream has been about bringing people together, and the Powell community has embraced us in that same spirit. This new store is a wonderful opportunity to serve even more families.”

The second Powell store will span 1,300 square feet and feature Johnson’s classic ice cream flavors, along with a series of shakes, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, cakes, pies and more. Details on the store’s grand opening will be released in the coming weeks, Johnson’s said.

“Johnson’s Real Ice Cream’s investment in a second location in downtown Powell is a testament to the strength of Powell’s market,” said Sean Hughes, Powell’s economic development administrator. “This second location is also an incredible addition to our efforts in revitalizing downtown Powell as an entertainment district centered on creating unique memories of food and fun for the whole family.”

The new Powell shops are two of three new Johnson’s locations launching in 2025, with the third set to open in May inside a Pickerington auto garage that the company is transforming into a 1,400-square-foot ice cream parlor.

Johnson’s will have tripled its central Ohio footprint in 12 months when the Pickerington store opens, after also opening three new locations in 2024, one in Grandview Heights, a second in Canal Winchester and the third in Italian Village. The brand operates its original store in Bexley and other locations in Dublin and New Albany.
