WESTERVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) — One person is dead after a construction accident near an elementary school.

There was a large police presence near the softball field at Alcott Elementary School in Genoa Township for an incident called in around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Friday, Westerville City Schools confirmed Jerry Kelbley died in an accident while working as a contractor.

The accident involved construction equipment, according to police, who said the victim may have been grading the infield of the softball field when it occurred.

Westerville schools said Kelbley was a former educator and longtime softball coach at Westerville South High School, who retired after 36 years as coach in 2017. Representatives said after his retirement, he continued his dedication to the schools by working on district high school fields.

Genoa Township Police Chief James McMillin said the victim was not associated with the township or school and that there is, “no threat to the public” and “no danger to the public.” Despite the incident, classes at Alcott Elementary continued as scheduled.
