COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A man accused of shooting two police officers during a Mifflin Township traffic stop remains in custody Monday recovering at a Columbus hospital, and a woman who allegedly harbored him faced a judge for the first time.

U.S. Marshals deputies arrested 21-year-old Daveonte Dixon after a manhunt that ended Friday. On Monday, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals Service and Mifflin Township police offered details on Dixon’s capture and provided details on the woman who they say helped hide him.

Dixon is facing two counts of felonious assault and one count of attempted felony after a traffic stop turned into a shootout near the intersection of Perdue Avenue and Mecca Road in a part of the Northeast Side that falls outside of Columbus city limits.

Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said that Dixon ran away from the passenger’s seat before turning and firing off several shots at the two officers. Both were injured, with one released from a hospital on Thursday and the other recovering after multiple surgeries.

Rewards were offered for Dixon’s capture, including $25,000 from the FBI, $10,000 from Central Ohio Crime Stoppers and $5,000 from the Fraternal Order of Police.

In Monday’s update, Major Nate Smith of the sheriff’s office said authorities used several leads in tracking Dixon, who was allegedly hiding out at a residence near a perimeter that authorities had set up.

A sheriff’s office SWAT team and U.S. Marshals executed a search warrant Thursday at a home on Woodland Avenue, but Dixon had already gone. Additional leads tracked Dixon to two possible residences on Cedar Drive in the Pine Hills area, but again, he was not found.

That search for Dixon led authorities to the Bridlewood Apartments complex on Thelma Drive in Obetz on Friday evening.

Court documents show that 31-year-old Jayla Call, the resident of the apartment, was detained and interviewed by deputies and that she admitted knowing Dixon was a fugitive while he was in her apartment for several hours. She also told deputies she deleted text messages from her phone between Dixon and another woman.

Smith said Call and three children left the home as SWAT units approached Thelma Drive and that Dixon barricaded himself inside. After Dixon fired several shots toward the officers, he was eventually found alone and inside the apartment with a rifle.

Dixon reportedly had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head or neck area. He remains in critical condition but is stable, Smith said. No other officers were injured.

Call was arrested, facing charges of obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence. A Franklin County Municipal Court judge issued Call a $250,000 bond Monday, and she is next scheduled to appear in court on June 10 for a preliminary hearing.
