GAHANNA, Ohio (WCMH) – Going from resignation to jubilation, Cincinnati Bengals fans at one Gahanna bar rode the roller coaster of sports emotions Sunday.
After the Bengals’ overtime win, though, some of those fans left The Pub in Gahanna thinking about travel plans to Los Angeles.
Central Ohio fans now have a reason to look forward to the Super Bowl after the Bengals upset the Kansas City Chiefs, going from a 21-3 deficit to winning 27-24 in overtime.
“I’m on cloud 9,” said Bengals fan Garret Staples. “I’ve been through the rough patches.”
Staples is a lifelong fan, as is Tom Magin. Both have been waiting 31 years for this moment.
“I can’t stop smiling now,” Magin said. “I’ll probably smile for two weeks until the Super Bowl. I’m so happy.”
He created what he calls the Columbus Bengal Nation, a group of fans who have been watching games together for 10 years. Recently, The Pub in Gahanna has been their go-to spot, and seeing Sunday’s win there was a special moment.
“It’s awesome, I’m so excited,” said fan James Steinfurth. “I love Joe Burrow, he’s the man. He’s brought Cincinnati back on the map and that’s where we need to be, on the map.”
Hartley Nakimuli lives in central Ohio, but is originally from Cincinnati.
“I need to be pinched right now,” Nakimuli said. “I can’t believe it.”
Nakimuli had flight plans for Los Angeles, where this year’s Super Bowl will be played, pulled up on her phone as she left The Pub.
“I mean, I’m getting in my car and I’m going to book it now,” she said.
The Bengals will play the LA Rams on Feb. 13, airing on NBC.
