Happ named permanent chief of Columbus Division of Fire

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Mayor Andrew Ginther appointed Jeffrey M. Happ as the Columbus Division of Fire Chief on Tuesday.

Ginther and Happ were joined at a news conference by Columbus Department of Safety Director Ned Pettus.

“I am confident Chief Happ will take this opportunity to leverage his experience and relationships to create change and position the Division of Fire as a model for the country,” Mayor Ginther said.

Happ, a 27-year Columbus Division of Fire, became a firefighter in 1993, and eventually becoming a battalion chief, captain and lieutenant. He is also a Certified Ohio Peace Officer Trainer for Homeland Security in bombs, explosives and incendiary devices. He is a graduate of Miami University.

Former Columbus Division of Fire Chief Kevin O’Conner resigned May 28, 2020. Happ had been serving as interim chief.
