GROVEPORT, Ohio (WCMH) — One of two people arrested in a shooting two years ago at a Groveport Madison High School football game has been sentenced to over a decade in prison.

Police arrested 18-year-old James Keys and a 15-year-old on Aug. 19, 2022, after going to the school’s stadium on reports of a shooting. Keys, now 20, pleaded guilty Nov. 6 to a felony charge of improperly discharging a firearm, as well as felonious assault, according to Franklin County Common Pleas Court records.

In exchange, prosecutors stopped pursuing a charge of tampering with evidence. Keys previously faced a charge of inducing panic as well, but it did not carry over when the case transferred to common pleas court from Franklin County Municipal Court, where it was originally filed.

After Keys entered a guilty plea, a judge subsequently sentenced him to 12 to 15 years in prison. He also ordered that Keys’ Glock switch — the small part that converts the brand of handguns to fully automatic weapons — be destroyed.

The original shooting happened in the final minutes of a game between Groveport Madison and Canal Winchester. Neither Keys nor the 15-year-old were students at the hosting school, according to Superintendent James Grube.

Officers reported at least six shots, and found that the handgun used had been modded to fully automatic. Columbus police have documented Glock switches as a growing problem in the city, seizing 75 of them in 2023 compared with 17 in 2022.

Fans attending the game told NBC4 they were evacuated from the stadium and instructed to leave school grounds in the aftermath of the shooting. The school district reported there were “no serious injuries,” as a result of the incident.
