WESTERVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) — A 44-year-old man is behind bars after a carjacking at a Westerville sandwich shop.

According to the Westerville Division of Police, it happened Wednesday at a busy shopping center on the northwest side of the suburb. The victim left his vehicle running while he went inside a sandwich shop to pick up his order.

While he was inside, police say David A. Smith approached the vehicle, got inside and started to drive away. The victim saw what was happening and attempted to regain control of the vehicle. Police say Smith drove through the parking lot with the victim attached to the side of the vehicle.

Smith eventually abandoned the vehicle and ran off to a nearby wooded area.

WPD officers conducted a search of the area, located Smith and took him into custody without incident. He is being held in the Delaware County Jail and faces charges of aggravated burglary.

Police say the victim did not sustain any major injuries.
