CANAL WINCHESTER, OHIO (WCMH) – One person was found dead, badly burned inside a truck that was on fire in a field in Canal Winchester late Wednesday night behind the Home Depot.

According to Madison Township fire department, the fire happened at approximately 11:18 p.m Wednesday night. When on scene, responders discovered a body in the driver seat of a 1996 Chevrolet truck that appeared to be stuck in water and mud off the roadway.

The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office  is investigating; Sheriff Phalen says an autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death, and the post mortem will be finished this morning (Thursday). The victim is believed to be male. Phalen says detectives from the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office along with investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Franklin County Coroner’s Office are working to positively identify the deceased person, as well as a possible mechanical cause of the fire.

Sheriff Phalen stated the case remains under investigation, but said foul play is not believed to be involved.
