(WCMH) — An Ohio state representative is proposing legislation that would enhance the penalties for failing to stop for a school bus picking up or dropping off children.
Rep. Niraj Antani, R-Miamisburg, says parents across the state have been complaining about this issue.
“It’s been happening in the Dayton area & across Ohio and it’s time to put school children first,” Antani said. “It’s simple: stop for school buses.”
Simple in theory, but as viral videos and recent reports of children being struck and killed at the bus stop, drivers across the country continue to disregard the law and fly past loading and unloading school buses.
Johanna Bently of Miamisburg caught a driver breaking this law and connected with Antani.
“This is happening once a month at my kid’s bus stop. I can only imagine this is happening at other bus stops just as frequently,” said Bently.
Antani drafted House Bill 786, which would increase the citation for failure to stop from $500 to $1,000, while also increasing the license suspension possibilities.
“I do not want to name this bill, unfortunately after a child that is struck and killed by a driver that doesn’t stop for a school bus. Our hope is to be preventative in nature and not reactionary,” said Antani.
The bill would also have the BMV display more educational graphics, and set aside 1 million dollars to retrofit buses with cameras, as well as place cameras where buses frequently stop.
He is proposing that one million dollars be set aside for schools to retrofit cameras on the bus itself.
“I always say with my bills, you know, I think I have good ideas, but maybe there’s better ideas out there. I want the public out there to come to me and say, look a $500 [fine] does not deter me..it’s something else,” said Antani.
Antani admits that his legislation may take some time because the current session is about to wrap up. He hopes he can get enough traction now to get it passed down the line.
