COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Ohio State University has named a new associate vice president of its Department of Public Safety, who will also serve as interim chief of police.

According to a news release, Monica Moll was promoted from her current role as director of public safety to the new position, and will serve as interim police chief after current Ohio State University Police Department chief Kimberly Spears-McNatt leaves Aug. 26.

“Monica continues to prioritize safety for all Buckeyes by growing our sworn police staffing and integrating new safety resources to deter crime,” said Mark Conselyea, interim senior vice president of the Office of Administration and Planning. “Her promotion to associate vice president is well deserved, and I have every confidence in her as interim chief.”

Moll joined OSU in 2016 in her current role, and will continue to oversee five divisions as associate vice president. She will manage the department’s over 300 staff, split among five departments: OSUPD, Communications and Security Technology, Central Campus Security Services, Wexner Medical Center Security, and Emergency Management and Fire Prevention.

Of those 300 staff, 75 are sworn police officers with OSUPD. Moll will serve as interim chief with support from deputy chiefs Dennis Jeffrey and Eric Whiteside, OSU representatives said. The university said it is conducting a national search for a new permanent police chief.
