Police say a 44-year-old Columbus man was killed in an accident on East Main Street, near downtown Columbus, Saturday morning.

It happened around 8:20 a.m., on the 400 block of East Main Street. According to police, Derrick L. Lawrence was traveling west on East Main Street at a high rate of speed and crashed into a pole. Officers said they found a gun at the scene.

Lawrence was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The car is in numerous pieces,” said Officer Kevin Yankovich. “This is probably one of the worst accident scenes I’ve ever seen.”

East Main Street is closed between South Grant Avenue and Interstate 71.

This is the 20th traffic fatality in Columbus in calendar year 2018.
