People rescued from homes after flooding in Fairfield County; many still without power

Several people were rescued from their homes in Fairfield County after flooding early Wednesday.

According to the Berne Fire Department, emergency crews were called to areas of Old Logan Road after flooding was reported in the area.

Firefighters say they had to evacuate several residents from their homes using boats due to the rising water.

About five people were rescued from the neighborhood, as well as two children.

Crews continue to evacuate more people from the neighborhood as the water continues to rise.

People who were rescued say they have never seen the water as high as it is now.

Power outages also persist for many in the county.

AEP Ohio says a hillside gave way, causing many trees to fall down and strike a power line. Those power lines fell into a creek.

Berne Township Fire arrived on scene as firefighters tried to get branches and trees out of the way. AEP Ohio trucks on the other side tried to restore power, as cars got stuck while trying to make their way through the blocked roadway on Old Logan Road.

“We were called here 3:10 this morning,” said Dennis Primmer, assistant chief of Berne Township Fire. “People (were) trapped in their trailers. We came out here and we’ve taken 5 adults and 2 children to our firehouse for a shelter, and we have another trailer parked just north of the scene we’re at. Took a few people out of here and they are going to the same place.”

The fire department would still like more of those residents to evacuate before more problems occur from those high waters.

Ashley Schorr was one of those residents evacuated,

“They told us just to, you know, ‘Two minutes, we’ll get your stuff and get you out of here,’ so that’s what we did.”

Her mother adds, “We made sure that we called 911 so they could get them away up and out.”

AEP Ohio says they are trying to restore power as soon as they can. More than 970 people are without power in Sugargrove.
