Police identify man killed during head-on crash in northeast Columbus

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — One person is dead after a crash in northeast Columbus, according to police.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, at about 9:26pm, Sunday, Johnnie Nelms Jr., of Columbus, was driving a 2008 Mercedes Benz 350 Series westbound on Morse Road near Dunbridge Street, when he attempted to pass another vehicle on the left in the center turn lane.


Police say Nelms traveled into the center lane where he struck the cement median, a road sign, and a pole. Nelms vehicle then continued into the eastbound lanes where it struck a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche in a head-on collision.

Nelms was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and a passenger in the Avalanche were taken to Grant Medical Center for treatment.

Police continue to investigate.
