A new kind of subscription service has come to Central Ohio: produce delivery. 

Founder of Perfectly Imperfect Produce Ashley Weingart’s family has been in the produce industry for more than a century.

“My husband was the 4th generation of his family to lead their wholesale produce distributor out of Cleveland. They were founded in 1900,” Weingart explained.

Friday, Weingart hand-delivered the first Columbus box to Ohio State student Natalie Bally.

Inside each box are fruits and vegetables not quite “pretty” enough for the grocery store, or that would have been otherwise thrown away.

“The things that we rescue are unique in size, shape or color on the outside, but on the inside, they’re totally fresh, and they taste exactly the same as perfect fruits and vegetables,” said Weingart.

The company started delivering boxes to the Cleveland area in May 2016.

“I think it’s awesome because there’s a lot of food insecurity around here, but there’s also a lot of food waste, which I think is a big issue,” said Bally. “There are people starving and there are people throwing away their food, so I think this is a great option to use things that would otherwise be thrown out.”
