REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (WCMH) – In its first few weeks open, more than 140,000 people have visited a new attraction at a Reynoldsburg park, and Columbus & Franklin County Metro Parks recently announced its maintenance plans.
The Canopy Walk at Blacklick Woods opened three weeks ago. Numbers from the park show as of earlier this month, 140,215 had visited the park. It’s quickly become a popular place for kids and adults to visit.
“It’s really cool, I like being up this high and just seeing the trees sway, that’s something that brought me here and then to have the physical part the kids can do is really neat,” said Kelsey Egelhoff.
After going up 99 steps or taking an elevator, explorers can walk around near the tops of trees. There’s also a play area and rope bridges.
“I felt very confident in myself, it was very well actually, I was just praying in my head that I wouldn’t fall but of course I knew I would do it,” said Gannon Jones, a 10-year-old who visited the walk Friday with his brother and father.
35,000 people visited the new attraction over Memorial Day weekend alone, according to Jessica McClintock, the park’s manager.
“We hoped it would be a really popular new feature here at Blacklick Woods we’ve just been pleasantly overwhelmed with the amount of people who’ve put this at the top their to do lists and come out and enjoyed this adventure in the treetops with us,” McClintock said.
The popularity has changed the park’s plans a bit. It recently announced starting next week the canopy walk will be closed the second and fourth Tuesday mornings of each month for maintenance.
“While we do daily inspections this will really give us the opportunity to go over things with a fine tooth comb,” McClintock said.
The rope bridges are supported by a series of cable systems. The cables need to be tested regularly without anyone on the bridges, according to McClintock. She said originally the team thought they’d be able to do that with the attraction open. With the amount of visitors the team decided its easier to close for a bit.
“We initially thought we could accomplish some of these things but due to the high popularity of it we just haven’t been able to do that the way we want to so cutting out these carved hours to ensure we are going to keep it top notch for everybody to enjoy,” McClintock said.
The Canopy Walk is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April to August and 9 a.m. To 5 p.m. from September to March. On the second and fourth Tuesdays of months, it’ll be closed until noon.
